Preparing For Your New Flooring
At Hagopian, we hold ourselves to a very high standard of service for our customers. We hope this information will make the installation process as easy as it was for you to select your new flooring in our showroom. If you have any further questions not covered here, or need special services, our expert sales consultants can help.
Set The Date
We work hard to make the installation process as efficient as possible and accommodate your schedule. Please choose a day when you can be flexible and our installers will have the room(s) to themselves. While the work is being done, anyone who is sensitive to dust or has allergies may wish to stay out of the house.
Get Ready For The Installers
To get the best possible fit, our installers may have to use your driveway, garage, or back porch for their equipment. If the installation is in a new home please make sure the electricity and heat (if it's winter) are on. A minimum temperature of 65 degrees is required during the installation to allow and adhesives or other products used to climatize properly. Wood flooring may need to be delivered up to a week in advance to facilitate it climatizing to your room before it is installed. Walls that have been recently painted should be thoroughly dry prior to your appointment to avoid any paint being accidentally transferred to your new floor.
Furniture & Breakables
Rooms must be cleared before installation. While we can move larger pieces of furniture for an additional charge, we greatly appreciate your assistance in removing personal mementos and fragile items. In family and dining rooms please remove breakable items such as dishes, lamps and vases. Disconnect and remove all electronic equipment like stereos, TVs, DVD players and computers. Bookcases should be emptied of all books and fish tanks moved. In bedrooms please strip the beds and remove all items from the bottoms of closets. This insures a speedy, accident-free installation.
Appliances and Bathrooms
Do you need your washer, dryer, refrigerator and any gas appliances disconnected and reconnected? For an additional charge, our skilled installers can take care of this for you. In bathrooms, you may need to hire a plumber to have the toilet removed before the work begins and reinstalled after the work is completed. Check with your sales consultant to see if this is necessary.
What About My Old Carpet?
We will be happy to remove and dispose of your old carpet for an additional charge. Please contact your sales consultant if you would like us to provide this service.
Do I Need A Carpenter?
In order to lay new carpet we will need to remove the doors from the room. When the installation is complete we will re-hang the doors, but only if they are able to clear the new carpet. If the doors hang too low you may need to get a carpenter to trim your doors down; not all installers are trained or equipped to do this. Talk to your sales consultant for more information. When removing old carpeting, our installers will do their best to avoid damaging the existing molding. But, if your old carpet was incorrectly laid under quarter round we cannot be responsible for breakage. A carpenter may be required to replace the molding after the installation. And finally, if you have any squeaking floor boards in the room where the new carpet is to be installed in, you may wish to contract a carpenter in advance.
What If There's A Problem?
While we strive to make every installation go as smoothly as possible, but hidden defects found in the carpet at the time of installation may require rescheduling. Installers will not accept a verbal waiver to proceed. We will make minor repairs if it will not affect the quality of the installation, but this is not always possible. In rare instances, manufacturers may require that the defective carpet be returned to the mill before they will send out a replacement piece, so there may be a minor delay before a 2nd installation date can be set.
Seams and Pattern Matching
In all but the smallest areas you will have seams. While these heat-bonded seams are generally much stronger than the rest of the carpet, even the most highly-skilled installer can't make the seams completely invisible. Some seams can be more apparent than others depending on the nap of the carpet and light sources. Your sales consultant will give you options on seam placement so you can choose the one that is best for your installation before the carpet is ordered.
Our installers are highly trained, but some of the more complex print designs and multi-tone patterns are impossible to match perfectly. We will take great care in matching any patterns as exactly as possible.
What To Expect After Your Installation
Left Over Carpet
Hagopian can transform your leftover carpet pieces into matching doormats or area rugs for a small fee ($2.50 a linear foot for binding or $4.50 for serging, plus a $15.00 cutting charge). It’s an inexpensive way to help protect your new carpet near the entrances to your home or in high-traffic areas, or spruce up adjoining rooms. It's also a good idea to keep pieces for any possible future patching or repairs.
That "New Carpet" Smell
Like new cars, newly installed carpet has a "new carpet smell." This will usually disperse quickly after installation. Another less common source of odor is adhesive, but this also disappears quickly. Proper ventilation is crucial during the actual installation. Open the doors and windows (weather permitting) and use fans to circulate the air both during the installation and for a day or two afterword.
Will My New Carpet Shed?
Most carpets, especially wool, retain loose fibers in their pile after they are manufactured. It is natural to see little bits of fuzz, or balls of fluff on your new carpet's surface after it is installed. In time these fibers will finish working their way out of the pile and will no longer be a nuisance. Regular vacuuming can shorten this time period considerably. If your vacuum has a beater bar make sure it is set at the proper height.
What Is Sprouting?
From time to time a loose tuft will appear above the carpet's surface; this is called "sprouting." This is a result of the blade missing a tuft when the carpet's pile is sheared down to its intended height at the mill. Never pull out loose tufts, simply clip the tuft even with the carpet's surface.
Why Are There Variations In My Carpet's Color?
You might notice some shading in your carpet after installation, especially when looking at it from different directions. Don't worry! It's not a defect in your new carpet. This is caused by light reflecting differently off the carpet fibers as the pile is pushed in different directions. Foot traffic is the number one cause of this and the simplest solution is to vacuum or rake your carpet's pile. You can purchase a "Perky Carpet Rake" at one of our stores.
Routine Care & Maintenance
Now that your installation is over you can relax and enjoy your new carpet! To keep it looking beautiful, vacuuming and periodic cleaning is crucial. Vacuuming removes surface dust and soils that haven't had time to work their way into your carpets fibers. Periodic professional cleaning using Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning) method is required by most carpet manufacturers. To minimize the risk of permanent soil staining in the walkways of your rooms we recommend cleaning your carpet every 6 -18 months which will vary based on the use.
For 70 years Michigan homeowners and businesses have trusted Hagopian Cleaning Services to keep their carpets looking like new.
